Molecular Biology and Biotechnology

General Information

Our research group is interested in the study of important agronomic crops for CLM region as grape, garlic and saffron using genomics, genetics, biotechnology, biochemistry and molecular biology tools

Main activities and interests

Currently, our research interests are focused in the following areas:

1. Characterization of the enzymes involved in the biosynthesis and modification of the metabolites of saffron:

  • Glycosyltransferases and glycosidases (CAZY enzymes) of flavonoids and apocarotenoids of Crocus sativus.
  • Characterization of the genes involved in the biosynthesis dioxygenases of apocarotenoids in saffron.

2. Elucidation of the regulation of biosynthesis apocarotenoids in saffron and related species through omics approaches.

3. Characterization of enzymes involved in the generation of two local varieties aromas of Castilla-La Mancha: Airen and Tempranillo:

  • Characterization of glucosidase involved in the aroma of two native varieties of Castilla-La Mancha: Airen and Tempranillo.

4. Phytochemical and molecular studies of purple garlic Pedroñeras:

  • Strategies for appreciation of purple garlic Pedroñeras over other non-local varieties.
  • Elucidation of the anthocyanin biosynthesis pathway in Cuenca purple garlic (Allium sativum)

5. Phytochemical and molecular characterization of medicinal plants of Castilla-La Mancha.
